Teaching and Workshops
I teach a course on Developing Your Career in Journalism: Essential Skills and Insider Knowledge at the Harvard Summer School and online at the Harvard Extension School.
This course is unlike most offered in journalism programs: it teaches the hard and soft skills that equip students to achieve their professional goals, from landing competitive jobs or internships, to developing a freelance portfolio to making a switch from an existing career into journalism. For editorial skills, students write personal essays and pitch them to publications of their choice. They also create a social media strategy for a big feature story. For the soft skills, students get hands-on instruction in resume and cover letter writing and do a mock job interview—videotaped if they wish—tailored to a job of their choice. Read the full course description here.
Registration for my Spring 2018 course starts November 13th.
I offer workshops to students, schools, and conferences on the following:
The realities of breaking into journalism
How to pitch freelance pieces
Resume and cover letter writing
How to ace a job interview
